THE NEW PAVILION APPEAL
The future: a new Gallowstree Common Pavilion
A pavilion for tomorrowThe proposal
Some four years ago, the Parish Council decided that it should grasp the nettle and replace the existing pavilion with a facility more suitable for the twenty-first century. A professional survey revealed that, although basically sound, the cost of maintenance would escalate in the near future. It also confirmed the deficiencies in the building mentioned above.
A plan was developed to replace the existing building and provide modern facilities to support the activities that currently take place on the site, and those we wish to encourage in the future. The new pavilion must however remain in keeping with its environment and suit the context of the site.
The Council hired an architect, Richard James, to design a replacement building. Following consultation with local residents in 2006, planning permission for a replacement Pavilion was applied for and this was granted in 2007.
The design
The new building has been carefully developed to provide the minimum facilities required, mindful of the size of the existing building, and with no detrimental effect on neighbouring residential properties. It will allow full access for disabled persons including those with impaired sight and hearing.
The external materials have been selected to achieve a coherent, logical solution in keeping with the rural setting and traditional materials of buildings in the area. Products will be locally sourced where economical to do so and the Parish Council are keen to use modern technologies for fuel saving measures and low running costs.
The benefits
The Playing Fields Committee are dedicated to encouraging the community, of all ages, to become more involved in sport and are looking to extend the list of activities provided on the site in the future.
This wonderful venue has outstanding cricket and football clubs whose membership is growing with both adult and youth teams. They are committed to supporting this project and encouraging further use of the grounds for other sporting activities.
